They will play music through it. The difference in bass and volume is the whole reason the Max exists, and a small speaker in a kitchen is the most common disappointment with smart speakers.

They want a voice assistant for timers, weather, reminders and controlling lights. For those jobs the small one is identical, and it is half the price.

Are smart speakers a privacy concern?
They listen for a wake word and send audio after it is detected. Whether that is acceptable is a personal judgement, and it is worth considering before gifting one to someone who has not asked for it.
Can you pair two for stereo?
Generally yes with matching models, which is a meaningful upgrade for music. Mixing different models usually does not work for stereo pairing.
Is this a good gift for an older relative?
Many people find voice control genuinely useful, particularly for timers, calls and reminders. Offer to set it up, since the account and wifi steps are the barrier rather than daily use.
